I consider myself lucky. For over three decades, I’ve had the privilege of using a skill I fell in love with as a kid (writing) and developing two other skills that go really well with writing: editing and proofreading.

Along the way, I also learned to love storytelling. Watching fairytales acted out by marionettes in live puppet shows in Children’s Fairyland in Oakland (across the bay from where I grew up in San Francisco, California) taught me how powerful a good story can be in one’s life.

Stories are not just for kids, though. They’re also important for adults AND for businesses … which is where I come in.

As a virtual assistant, I help small business owners and entrepreneurs clarify their messages and communicate them in a variety of ways – like writing case studies, press releases, social media posts, and newsletters. And to make sure those messages are all error-free and accurate, I also do proofreading and copyediting.

Why Are Stories So Important?

When your story is clear, your message is clear. And when your message is clear, people will remember it. They’ll also share it with others – on social media, in emails, and when chatting with friends on the phone.

As someone who spent over 35 years in the field of journalism (first as a reporter, then as an editor, freelance writer, technical writer, and copywriter), I became very good at sharing people’s stories. I enjoyed the variety of projects I worked on, as well as the people I met along the way.

As a native Californian, I’ve lived my entire life in the northern half of the state. I enjoy living near lots of trees and rural countryside, but I also try to make it to the coast at least once a year. (Stinson Beach in Marin County, just north of San Francisco, is my favorite place for that!)

My husband, Tom, and I live in the eastern part of Sacramento County, not far from the Sierra Nevada foothills … where, on a clear day, we can see lots of snow-capped mountains. I also have a grown “Gen Z” son, Ben. And three step-daughters, seven grandchildren (four of whom are older than my son!), and one great-grandchild – all on the East Coast.
